Boat fleet

Grím Karlsson

About 140 models of ships and boats are preserved in Reykjanesbær's Building Museum.

The vast majority of them were built by captain Grímur Karlsson.

Grímur Karlsson

Grímur lived in Njarðvík from a young age and started his career as a ship captain at a young age. He completed a pilot's course for a 30-ton ship in 1952, at the age of 16. In the same year, he became the captain of Marz GK 374 and was granted an exemption due to his young age. Later, he took the more specialized fisherman's test after completing his studies at the pilot school in Reykjavík. Grímur steered many boats during his career. Models of some of them are shown here.

Grímur started building the models in his fifties and diligently collected various kinds of knowledge about the history of the fishing industry in Iceland. Grímur was prolific and after him there are over five hundred models owned by various organizations and individuals. For his construction, Grímur was honored with the Icelandic falcon word in 2009, Reykjanesbær's Culture Award the same year and the Sailor's Day word in 2002. Grímur died in 2017.
